Company Overview:
A British-Swedish multinational pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical company, AstraZeneca was founded through the merger of the Swedish Astra AB and the British Zeneca Group, a merger that made AstraZeneca among the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies. With a broad portfolio of products for major diseases, the company discovers, develops, manufactures and markets prescription medicines used in oncology, cardiovascular, renal and metabolism, as well as respiratory, infection, neuroscience and gastroenterology across the globe.
Mostly known for its fast-growing and cutting-edge cancer medications like Tagrisso, Imfinzi and Lynparza, in 2020, AstraZeneca joined the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic by working with Oxford University to develop a candidate vaccine. The AZD1222 vaccine proved successful, with the UK becoming the first country in the world to approve the vaccine. In January 2021, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) recommended granting a conditional marketing authorisation for the vaccine in people of 18 years and above.
